IS 4756 requires: maximum 150mm clear gap between vertical balusters (head entrapment prevention — critical for schools, hospitals and children's occupancies); handrail grip profile of 38–50mm OD circular or oval; top rail at consistent height measured vertically from stair nosing throughout the run. The nosing measurement is the compliance reference — the vertical height from nosing to handrail top is shorter than the perpendicular measurement. For a 35° stair rake, the difference is approximately 10–12%. Both dimensions must be on the shop drawing.
Straight-flight stairs with standard rake are the least expensive. Dog-leg stairs require careful post placement and rail return at the 180° landing — well within standard fabrication practice. Helical and curved stairs are the most complex: the top rail must follow the helical path while simultaneously changing elevation. Cold-bending handles radii above approximately 2,500mm; tighter radii require hot-bending or purpose-formed sections. For helical staircases in premium projects, we recommend a pre-fabrication site visit and template survey before confirming dimensions.
NBC 2016 Part 4 requires non-combustible materials in fire escape stairwells. SS and glass are both non-combustible and fully compliant. For fire-rated stairwell enclosures where the glass infill forms part of the fire compartment boundary, standard toughened glass does not provide fire resistance — fire-rated glass (borosilicate or fire-resistant laminated) is required and is significantly more expensive. We supply both the SS railing frame and fire-rated glass infill for full stairwell compliance.
