What is the minimum handrail height for staircases per NBC 2016?
NBC 2016 requires a minimum handrail height of 900mm measured vertically from the pitch line of the staircase. The balustrade infill must prevent a 100mm sphere from passing through any opening. Handrails must be provided on both sides of staircases wider than 1500mm.

NBC 2016 requires a minimum horizontal load of 1.5 kN/m for staircase railings in commercial buildings and public spaces. Residential staircase railings require 0.75 kN/m minimum. High-occupancy spaces such as assembly halls and stadiums require 3.0 kN/m.
