What is the NBC 2016 requirement for glass partitions in commercial buildings?

NBC 2016 Chapter 4 requires that glass used in internal partitions in commercial buildings be safety glass — either toughened (IS 2553) or laminated (IS 16613). For partitions in fire-rated corridors and escape routes, fire-rated glazing to IS 16426 is required. Frameless glass partitions must use a minimum of 10mm toughened glass.

What is the difference between frameless and framed glass partitions?

Frameless glass partition systems use minimal aluminium channels at floor and ceiling with no vertical mullions, creating a fully transparent open-plan feel. Framed systems use aluminium or steel frames around each glass panel. Frameless systems are preferred for premium offices and hotels. Framed systems are more economical and offer better acoustic performance.

What acoustic performance can glass partitions achieve?

Standard 10mm toughened glass partitions achieve approximately 32-35 dB Rw sound reduction. Double-glazed acoustic partition systems with a 50-100mm cavity and laminated glass achieve 42-48 dB Rw, which meets the NBC 2016 requirement for meeting rooms and private offices. For boardrooms and recording studios, specialist acoustic glazing up to 52 dB Rw is available.

Can glass partitions be moved or reconfigured?
