The Metallurgical Difference - Why Molybdenum Matters
Both SS 304 and SS 316 are austenitic stainless steels with similar chromium and nickel content. The critical difference is that SS 316 contains 2-3% molybdenum, which SS 304 does not. Molybdenum dramatically increases resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion caused by chloride ions - the primary corrosion mechanism in coastal Indian environments.
The Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) quantifies this difference. A higher PREN means greater resistance to chloride-induced pitting:

What Coastal Corrosion Actually Looks Like
SS 304 railings in coastal environments do not fail suddenly - they degrade progressively in a predictable pattern. Within 6-12 months of installation in a coastal city like Mumbai or Chennai, surface staining and discolouration begins, particularly on horizontal surfaces and in areas with poor drainage. Within 2-3 years, pitting corrosion becomes visible as small dark spots that cannot be removed by cleaning. By years 4-5, the pitting has penetrated the surface layer and the aesthetic appearance is permanently compromised.
The cost of replacing corroded SS 304 railings - including removal, disposal, new material, fabrication, and installation - is typically 3-4 times the original cost premium of specifying SS 316 correctly at the outset.

Environments Beyond the Coast That Need SS 316
Coastal location is not the only indicator for SS 316. The following environments also require marine-grade stainless steel regardless of proximity to the sea:
- Swimming pool surrounds - all cities. Pool water contains 1-3 ppm free chlorine and elevated chloride concentrations. SS 304 will pit and stain within 1-2 years. SS 316 is mandatory for any railing within splash distance of pool water.
- Pharmaceutical and food processing plants. Regular cleaning with chlorinated and acidic cleaning agents creates a highly aggressive environment. SS 316 is the minimum specification for hygienic environments.
- Chemical plants and refineries. Process chemical exposure, acid rain, and cooling tower drift create corrosive microenvironments. SS 316 minimum, sometimes Duplex 2205 for aggressive applications.
- Hospital operating theatres and sterile areas. Frequent sterilisation with chlorine-based agents. SS 316 required.
- Coastal industrial zones. Industrial areas near coasts combine salt air with industrial pollution, creating more aggressive conditions than either alone. Examples include JNPT in Navi Mumbai and Ennore near Chennai.
The 5km Rule - And Why It Is Too Simple
You will often see the guideline that SS 316 is required within 5km of the coast. This is a useful starting point but is too simplistic for precise specification. The actual distance at which coastal corrosion becomes significant depends on:
- Prevailing wind direction - buildings in the direct path of onshore winds need SS 316 further inland than sheltered buildings
- Building height - higher buildings experience more wind-driven salt spray at all heights
- Monsoon intensity - Kerala and Karnataka coasts receive heavier monsoon rainfall than Gujarat, increasing salt deposition and washout cycles
- Urban heat island effect - dense urban areas retain humidity and salt particles longer than open areas
For projects in the 5-15km coastal zone, the conservative and correct specification is SS 316 for external railings. The cost premium is modest and the alternative - early replacement - is far more expensive.
How to Specify SS Grade Correctly in Project Documents
Ambiguous specifications are a common source of contractor substitution. To prevent SS 304 being supplied in place of SS 316, include the following in your specification documents:
- State the EN grade explicitly: EN 1.4401 (SS 316) or EN 1.4301 (SS 304)
- Require material test certificates (MTC) from the steel mill showing chemical composition and mechanical properties
- Specify that no substitution is permitted without written approval from the structural engineer
- Include a clause requiring the contractor to demonstrate grade compliance before fabrication begins
