Glass partition specifications in commercial buildings are frequently incomplete in Indian project documents. The most common gap is treating glass as an aesthetic material rather than a structural and safety component. NBC 2016 Chapter 4 is explicit on safety glass requirements, and non-compliance creates liability for architects and project owners at the building completion certificate stage.
This guide consolidates the NBC 2016 requirements relevant to glass partition systems so that architects, interior designers, and project managers can specify correctly without reading the full code.
NBC 2016 Chapter 4, Clause 4.15 requires that any glass used in a position where a person could fall against it or where breakage could cause injury must be safety glass. This definition covers virtually all glass partition applications in commercial buildings. The code recognises two types of safety glass:
| Location | Required Glass Type | Min Thickness | NBC 2016 / IS Reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| General office partitions - full height | Toughened | 10mm | NBC 2016 Cl 4.15 / IS 2553 |
| Full height partitions above 3.5m | Toughened | 12mm minimum | NBC 2016 Cl 4.15.2 |
| Escape routes and protected corridors | Toughened or laminated | 10mm toughened / 6+6 laminated | NBC 2016 Cl 4.3 / IS 2553 |
| Fire-rated locations (30 min rating) | Fire-rated glazing | Per fire rating system | IS 16426 |
| Fire-rated locations (60 min rating) | Fire-rated glazing | Per fire rating system | IS 16426 |
| Partitions adjacent to stairwells | Toughened or laminated | 10mm minimum | NBC 2016 Cl 4.3 |
| Reception and lobby screens below 900mm | Toughened or laminated | 8mm minimum | NBC 2016 Cl 4.15.1 |
| Overhead or sloped glazing | Laminated only | 6+6mm minimum | IS 16613 / NBC 2016 Cl 4.15.4 |
| Acoustic partition in meeting room | Laminated (double glazed) | 6+6 per leaf minimum | IS 16613 |
Where glass partitions are used in fire-rated enclosures, escape routes, or stairwell enclosures, ordinary toughened or laminated glass is not sufficient. Fire-rated glazing to IS 16426 is required, classified by integrity (E) and insulation (EI) ratings:
| Rating | Performance | Typical Application |
|---|---|---|
| E-30 (30 min integrity) | Prevents flame passage for 30 minutes | Internal fire compartment walls in low-risk areas |
| E-60 (60 min integrity) | Prevents flame passage for 60 minutes | Protected escape routes, stair enclosures |
| EI-30 (30 min integrity and insulation) | Prevents flame and heat passage for 30 minutes | High-occupancy commercial buildings |
| EI-60 (60 min integrity and insulation) | Prevents flame and heat passage for 60 minutes | Hospitals, assembly buildings, high-rise escape routes |
Fire-rated glazing requires a complete certified system - the glass, frame, gaskets, and fixings must all be tested together and installed exactly as tested. Substituting components invalidates the fire rating.
NBC 2016 does not specify minimum acoustic performance for office partitions - this is typically set by the client or by workplace design standards. The following are industry benchmarks used in Indian commercial projects:
| Space Type | Min Rw Target | Recommended Partition System |
|---|---|---|
| Open plan dividers | 30-35 dB | 10mm single toughened frameless |
| Standard private office | 35-40 dB | 12mm single toughened framed |
| HR and legal offices | 40-44 dB | Double glazed 50mm cavity |
| Boardrooms | 44-48 dB | Double glazed 100mm cavity, laminated |
| Recording studios and media rooms | 50+ dB | Specialist acoustic system |
| Medical consultation rooms | 40-44 dB | Double glazed 50mm cavity |
